Aspirants should understand the requirement of the Civil services Examination:

Some Initial steps to be followed by the Aspirants

  • Believe in yourself and just start the preparations, because starting is the most difficult step that you need to make. After making start, a number of ways open up. An anonymous scholar has said that:

“when you require something more than air, then even a stone lying on the path shows you the right direction”

  • Read the UPSC notification carefully.
  • Read the UPSC Civil Services Examination Previous Year questions carefully, and analyze your strengths and weaknesses. Try to make an analysis of the whole syllabus, according to your comfort level.
  • Once you have understood the nature of the examination, you shall have a good insight into the nature of the exam. This should help in boosting your confidence.
  • Make Long-term plans about your preparations and goals in life. Thereafter, divide the long-term plan into short-term viable goals.

Purpose of the Different Stages of the IAS Examination


Meaning of IAS

Preliminary Examination

The Questions asked in the Preliminary examination are of objective type. The examination consists of 2 papers- GS and CSAT- of 200 marks each.

The purpose of the Prelims is to test the wide knowledge, aptitude and awareness of the candidate.

Main Examination

The Mains Examination is intended to assess the overall intellectual traits and depth of understanding. The nature and standard of questions in the General Studies papers, according to the UPSC notification, is such that ‘a well-educated person will be able to answer them without any specialized study. The scope of the Optional papers is broadly of the Honours degree level, which is considered as a level higher than the Bachelors’ degree, but lower than that of the Post Graduate degree.


The Interview for the Civil Services Examination aims at unraveling and understanding the thoughts of a candidate to assess his personality. The views and opinions of the aspirants, his interests and abilities, his body language and communication skills, all are a reflection of his thinking and state of mind.

Experience Speaks

An IAS officer shared his experience saying that he had failed in his engineering examination several times. However, with his hard work and sincerity, he cracked the IAS exam, with a commendable rank of 40. A good idea that he shared was-
