UN International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD)


Background

Development is the expansion of the human opportunities and freedom. This is an understanding inherent in the commitment by all the UN member states. It represents the shared aspirations of governments and citizen to ensure that- all person are free from want and fear, and are provided with the basic opportunities and the social arrangements to develop their unique capabilities; and, participate fully in society. In order to achieve these goals, the Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) was held in Cairo, Egypt, in 1994, with some 20000 delegates from various countries, UN agencies, NGOs and the Media organizations. The Conference discussed and showed a remarkable consensus on the issues of socio-political-economic equality, including a comprehensive definition of sexual and reproductive health and rights of the Women and children. Other issues discussed in the conference were- population growth, sustainable economic growth and sustainable development.

Doctrine of Karma

This doctrine asserts that whatever a person suffers/enjoys is a fruit of his own deeds. This doctrine introduces the concept of cycles of births, in which, an individual take rebirth after living a life. Through his karma of the previous birth, his fate is determined for the present birth. Karma can be of four types- Sanchit karma, which means the accumulated past actions; Prarabdha karma, which means the part of karma which has been done in the present birth; Kriyamana karma, which means the present voluntary actions of the free will; and Agami karma, which means the immediate result caused by our present actions. Reign of Terror

The old National Assembly was replaced by a Legislative Assembly. It took over the property of those who had fled. The Legislative Assembly declared a war against the Austrian Emperor, when he refused to renounce treaty directed against the French nation. Soon, France was fighting against Austria, Prussia and Italy.

France had destroyed feudalism and monarchy and founded new institutions based on liberty and equality. The King and Queen were tried and executed in 1793. This was followed by war against Britain, Holland, Spain and Hungary. Read More…

An essay on Role of IT and BT


There exists an unexplored potential of integration between the Information Technology and the Biotechnology (BT). While the IT sector has largely developed due to the initiatives of the private sector; the growth of the Biotechnology sector has mainly been due to the efforts of the government.

In every revolution, revolutionary thinking and ideas precede revolutionary actions. The 18th century France produced many revolutionary thinkers.

Age of Reason

Because of the ideas expressed by the French intellectuals, the 18th century has been called the Age of Reason. While Christianity taught that man was born to suffer, the French thinkers asserted that man was born to be happy. Happiness can be achieved if reason is used to destroy prejudice and reform man’s institutions. They either denied the existence of God or ignored him. In place of God, they asserted the doctrine of ‘Nature’ and the need to understand its laws. Faith was put in reason.
